MoonGlow
A Celebration of Women Singer-Songwriters
MoonGlow is a concert series comprising four acts of exceptionally talented women singer-songwriters performing together for one evening, in a tasteful concert venue. It allows these wonderful artists to show-case their original work to delight, fascinate, educate and inspire audiences and fellow musicians alike. It also highlights the diversity of their lyrical and musical styles, instrumentation, rich arrangements and vocal interpretation of songs creating a special experience for all involved.
The conceptMoonGlow is a stunning new concept which is about giving a voice to women singer-songwriters. It takes years to develop a profile as an original artist - the journey can be demanding, time-consuming and frustrating - the rewards elating but often few and far between. There is always the constant battle between focussing your energy into your passion and dealing with the distractions of everyday life, particularly for the great multi-taskers - women.
There is such a wealth of talent out there and it deserves to be heard and appreciated. So many wonderful songs have been written only to have been enjoyed by very few. MoonGlow is about bringing together a selection of that talent into an evening of song, highlighting the diversity of brilliant original material written and performed by women. It is an invitation to the audience to experience the gift of thought, emotions and stories expressed through music and verse.
The backgroundMelbourne singer-songwriter, Tracey Roberts, originally approached Nancy Cato, Artistic and Business Manager of Chapel off Chapel, about performing there as a solo artist. Nancy liked Tracey's work and suggested that for a first concert it might be good to combine artists in one event. This triggered discussion of an idea Tracey conceived a few years ago, based on putting together several concerts promoting Australian women singer-songwriters. Nancy mentioned that the Chapel had previously held a series of events back in Autumn of 1997 called "A Celebration of Women in Theatre" and suggested that this new idea could be similarly developed into a "Celebration of Women Singer Songwriters" - and so the project was born.
The inspiration for the name "MoonGlow"
The name, MoonGlow, is inspired by the Hindu Goddess of learning and music, Sarasvati. She is said to preside over and protect wisdom and eloquence in the arts, revealing to us the beauty in music, writing and poetry. She is also a river goddess, governing the flow of water and has a crescent moon on her forehead.
The artists
Every one of these women has carved a niche in the music world, unique to their talent. They are all outstanding performers with many years of experience between them including live performance, recording albums, touring, TV, radio and news media coverage, teaching and continuing to compose their own material and working on related projects. Given their combined experience, broad spectrum of material and exceptional artistry, and the excellence of the musicians accompanying them, they are memorable and special nights. CDs are available to purchase at the event.
The venue - Chapel Off Chapel
Chapel Off Chapel in Prahran has been chosen as the preferred venue because of its ambience and acoustic quality, its diversity of product and growing profile. The management has also been very supportive of the concept of MoonGlow and encourages the nurturing of new and talented artists.
The presentation
MoonGlow is not just a musical feast but it introduces a theatrical element in visual terms. Tracey Roberts of Pangaea Productions is working together with Larry Boyd, an artistic director, who has some wonderful ideas about how to present the "look" and presentation of MoonGlow for each of the concerts.
This aspect distinguishes the MoonGlow concert series from other music events around women performers by providing not only a platform for women singer-songwriters and their music but a visual interpretation and attraction and appeal to audiences who will enjoy a sophisticated and theatrical evening of musical sounds and imagery.
The format
The MoonGlow program consists of 4 acts, the female singer-songwriters performing a 20 minute set, with or without additional accompaniment, exhibiting a diverse range of their material within that set. There are 2 acts before interval, a 20 minute interval then the 2 remaining acts. Men are not excluded as accompanists and all artists appear together at the end of the 4 acts to perform a pre-arranged piece of music as a finale to the program.Nancy Cato, the Artistic and Business Manager of Chapel Off Chapel, acts as the presenter for the night, introducing the artists at the beginning of the event and thanking relevant people involved (artists, producers, sponsors, venue staff etc).
